Ofgem said that ‘in recent weeks there has been an unprecedented increase in global gas prices which is putting financial pressure on suppliers Ofgem is working closely with government and industry to make sure customers continue to be protected this winter’. Ofgem’s chief executive Jonathan Brearley has said that ‘well above’ hundreds of thousands of customers may well be affected. There are rumours that more energy suppliers could be in trouble. Some of the companies that have ceased trading have blamed rising wholesale prices, especially gas. So far, more than two million customers have been affected since the beginning of September 2021. Energy companies are closing at unprecedented rates.
